If you don’t know by now, my name is Nicola and I am a new team member at Acorn Enterprise.
I have been here for just over a month now and all I must say is they messed me up!…But before you judge, here’s my story so far.
Before I came to Acorn Enterprise, I was set on what I was doing. I had just finished my Honours in Business Management and I was going to go on and do a Masters in Business, then a PHD and then teaching in Universities. That was enough money to provide for my family, whilst helping others (students).
I Had Never Done An Interview Before!
The opportunity to help at Acorn Enterprise came by chance. I had never done an interview before in my life so I was never going to be prepared for it!
I decided that this was an opportunity and “you never know what will happen”. I answered the interview questions honestly, no scripted answers involved. If they didn’t want me, I would continue what I was doing, with a little bit more interview experience.
Well, did they not go and offer me a job!
I was excited because this was going to be a fantastic opportunity to gain real valuable skills and help people!
I Have Learned About Myself
So far I have gained some genuine skills, which I will continue to learn and develop. However, it isn’t the skills that has surprised me the most…
Firstly, I have learned about myself. I had in my head what I was aiming to achieve but Acorn Enterprise and the entrepreneurs they help made me realise I was only trying to achieve this because it was the norm. Get a job, earn money, provide for family = safe life.
My dreams were different from what was “safe”. I believed that the chances of achieving my real dreams were not only very far to reach, but I didn’t believe in myself enough to do it. This experience completely threw me off track!
A Whole New World
Acorn Enterprise opened a whole new world to me and it scared me.
Last week I was doing my Masters, working at Acorn Enterprise and working at McDonalds. It was taking its toll but I’m not a quitter and I didn’t want to give anything up.
However, my gut was telling me Acorn Enterprise is the right place to be and I didn’t need my Masters.
After much talk, soul-searching and listening to other people, I decided to leave the Masters and focus on Acorn Enterprise. It is a risk for me because I’m moving down a different road from where I thought I should be going. I never thought I would have another route, yet here I am and it feels good!
These Entrepreneurs Are…
The most important part of my time here at Acorn Enterprise is the people.
Almost every day I have met someone new and I can’t emphasise enough how much they inspire me and hit me in the “feels”!
These people and entrepreneurs are inspiring, courageous, hard-working, ambitious, compassionate, philosophical, witty…the list goes on.
They strive every day to make their businesses work and deal with a lot of unbelievable shit along the way!
They are role models, and they need to be shouted about more often, no matter how much money they make. Not only can we learn business lessons but life lessons too. They sure have taught me a lot so far.
So, I’m continuing this new adventure with the most excitement and passion I have ever had. And with the utmost gratitude and thanks to those who I have encountered over the past few weeks.
These entrepreneurs’ worlds are in front of us every day and they are some of the most inspiring people you will meet.
They are not in it for the money, they want to make people’s lives better and we should support them with that. They just made my life better!
