About Acorn Enterprise
Our Mission: to Grow Scotland's Start-up Business Culture
Acorn Enterprise is a not-for-profit organisation that educates and accelerates new businesses and student entrepreneurs.
Our mission is to grow Scotland’s start-up business culture, by creating a sustainable movement that will lead to a fundamental change in attitude and behaviour.
We are more than a Business Accelerator
We run 20 week Business Accelerator Programmes, Acorn Business Bootcamps and Entrepreneurial Events. We have a unique perspective as we work with new business owners and enterprising students at Colleges and Universities.
How We Generate Revenue
Acorn Enterprise receive no core funding so we generate revenue through:
- corporate sponsorship,
- running our 20 week Business Accelerator Programmes,
- working with Further and Higher education institutions,
- rapid prototyping (Acorn 3D Printing).
All revenue generated is directly re-invested back into helping new businesses grow and thrive via our 20 week Business Accelerator Programme, which is free to the "Acorns" (participants).
"The programme has helped me overcome all the issues that many new start up companies face. From confidence, believing in my worth, talking about my business to simple accountancy, marketing and sales." - Debbie Kemp - Owner of Dragnet Design
Why Did We Launch Acorn Enterprise?
Whilst there has never been a better time to launch a new business in Scotland, we feel there is a gap in the support for business owners in more rural locations, like Fife, where we're based.
We also believe that there is a lot of support for new high-growth businesses, the high-tech industry and companies seeking investment, however, other start-up busineses, that do not fit into these categories, have been left behind.
Therefore, our focus is on building sustainable new businesses, that may not employ 1000's of people or have global aspirations, but are of paramount importance to the local communities they operate in and to the local staff they employ.
Acorn Enterprise is really here to accelerate these local business heroes by enabling ordinary people to do extraordinary things!
How Did We Get Started?
Acorn Enterprise was initially run as a 20-week pilot project to help new businesses in Fife (Scotland) by Kallum "with a K" Russell and Jerry Alexander in June 2013. They met through networking and are both passionate about helping new businesses grow and thrive - they've also been known to play a few games of tablefootball every now and again!
During this pilot, Kallum and Jerry co-founded Acorn Enterprise in November 2013, a not-for-profit organisation that would build on the success and momentum of the first 20-week Business Accelerator Programme and since then, the organisation has worked with over 150 new and growing businesses, Students and others interested in enterprise.
Acorn Enterprise has run five successful 20 week Business Accelerator Programmes in Fife, working with 75 Awesome Acorns (participants) overall. The range of businesses includes: graphic designers, a low-calorie spirits company, artisan chocolate makers, app developers, recruitment businesses and even a pilot training school!
Of those that completed the Programme, 75% are still growing and thriving - very high when compared to the normal statistic, 90% of new businesses fail in their first year.
Based on this success, we were approached by several local Colleges and Universities to bring our exciting and unique approach of teaching enterprise to help enhance the student experience and accelerate aspiring student entrepreneurs. We're delighted to have worked with so many Scottish Colleges and Universities since 2013 and we look forward to working with even more soon to put enterprise at the heart of what they do!
We are now looking to increase the impact of our proven enterprise activities to help even more new businesses and student entrepreneurs across Scotland and if you're interested in speaking to us about this, please get in touch here.
