If you’re thinking of applying for the next Acorn Enterprise Business Accelerator Programme in Dundee, you clearly have good judgement! 🙂
Runs February 2019 – June 2019. Limited places.
You may also have some questions about the Programme, so we have written this blog to answer those for you. This will allow you to decide if the Business Accelerator Programme is the right step for you at this stage.
Q. Am I expected to attend every day for the duration of the Business Accelerator Programme?
The Business Accelerator Programme runs for 5 months. The time commitment is a two 2-hour seminar every Tuesday and Friday, 9.30am-11.30am.
There will also be other events such as “Meet the Acorns” and the “Graduation Party” on a Friday lunchtime, 12.00pm-1.30pm, that you will also be expected to attend.
Whilst this may seem like a massive time commitment, Acorns on the last 9 Programmes have all asked that the seminars be extended so they can go into subjects in even more detail!
The time really does fly, and although you are not “working in your business” during this time, it is time wisely invested in yourself to: develop your business and build stronger foundations for a sustainable future.
We know that life can get in the way so we don’t expect you to attend 100% of these seminars. However, if you miss too many seminars, you won’t get the full value from the Programme and your place may be offered to another applicant or you will be asked to leave.
Q. Is the Programme really free?
Yes! There is NO COST to the new businesses that participate and we don’t take a share of your business either.
However, we do ask at the beginning of the Programme for a small deposit to cover key fobs/cards. These allow you access to use the co-working space in the Flour Mill over the duration of the Business Accelerator Programme in Dundee.
Acorn Enterprise is on a MISSION to grow the UK’s entrepreneurial culture, and this is our way of giving back.
We fund the Programme by working with Colleges, Universities and other organisations, who want to put entrepreneurship and innovation at the heart of what they do.
We do NOT receive any funding from the Council, the Government or Trusts.
Q. What will I learn on the Business Accelerator Programme in Dundee?
The Tuesday seminars consist of a range of topics covering: Marketing in 2018 and Beyond, Your Sales Challenges Overcome, Time Management and Productivity and much, much more!
The seminars are led by Team Acorn, successful local entrepreneurs and business leaders, who are all experts in their fields. Many have also been in your position at some time, so know exactly what you’re going through.
The Friday session is all about Accountability. Every week we will ask you to set and review goals and this will allow you to push your business forward.
It is down to you to make sure you achieve these goals. As a group we will support each other, celebrate achievements and also give you a kick up the ass if needed!
Q. What have previous participants said about the Business Accelerator Programme?
Acorn Enterprise have successfully run 9 Business Accelerator Programmes over the last 5 years and have helped over 80 new businesses.
Of those that have graduated from the Programme, 70% are still growing and thriving!
Previous Acorns (“Saplings”) have said things like: “Acorn helped me find myself” and “Acorn gave me the kick start to achieve my dreams!”. This makes us feel very proud of the impact we are having!
You can watch this cheeky video, where previous Acorns say how they benefited from the Business Accelerator Programme.
Q. How many places are there?
Typically, we only work with between 5-15 new business owners on each Business Accelerator Programme, so that each Acorn can get the most value from it.
Q. How many people tend to apply for a place?
As word grows about the Programme, we are continually over-subscribed, so if you’re thinking of applying, go for it now!
Q. When will I hear if I have a place or not?
After you have applied for the Programme, you will hear from us shortly after to confirm that we have safely received your application form.
After that, we will process all application form and if you score highly enough on our criteria, we will invite you to attend a selection interview. These interviews will take place about a month before the Programme start (late August/early September 2018).
If you have secured a place, you should be notified about two weeks before the Programme starts (the start date is Tuesday 25th September).
Q. Where is the Programme based?
The first few Business Accelerator Programmes were based at Liberty Space in Rosyth and Kinross.
And the last two Programmes have been based in the great city of Dundee, in the Flour Mill. This is where the next, and tenth, Programme will be based.
Q. What makes the Acorn Enterprise Business Accelerator Programme different to other Programmes?
The Acorn Enterprise Business Accelerator Programme is run by entrepreneurs, who have experienced the very stages you are going through right now. They have built their businesses successfully so can provide you with expertise and experiences gained first-hand.
Our approach is around encouraging, supporting and championing. We really want you to succeed and will do everything we can to ensure this! This doesn’t mean we will do the work for you. Nor does it mean we are fluffy and huggy. We have a good balance between providing you with a safe-environment to grow with other new business others going through the same adventure, and stretching you, raising your aspirations and challenging you.
Acorn Enterprise is totally invested in your success and look at you AND your business. We know this path can be demanding on your emotional and personal state, and we have seen our fair share of tears and meltdowns. We’re not just doing this to tick some boxes and make some money, we’re doing it to change lives.
Finally, Acorn Enterprise is not funded by the Government, banks, or anyone else.
We generate revenue by working with Colleges and Universities, and other organisations to help them with enterprise, innovation and marketing. This money is directly fed back into the Business Accelerator Programme. This allows us to provide this to you for free.
